THE FILMMAKER

RYAN MOBBERLEY

MIDLANDS, ENGLAND

One of the biggest influences on the way I film weddings is keeping my setup as simple and lightweight as possible. I like to work in a similar way to a photographer, always moving, always observing, and always ready. Weddings don’t wait, and some of the most meaningful moments happen without warning.

By carrying a lightweight kit and keeping my camera in my hands, I can react instantly rather than worrying about changing equipment or setting up shots. It allows me to stay present, blend into the background, and capture genuine moments exactly as they unfold.

I shoot almost exclusively handheld because it gives me the speed and freedom to follow the day naturally. Instead of relying on lots of different lenses, I use a zoom lens on my main camera, which lets me move from wide, scene-setting shots to intimate close-ups in seconds without breaking the flow. It keeps me creative, adaptable, and focused on storytelling rather than gear.

For me, the best wedding films come from being in the right place at the right time, not from carrying the biggest camera bag.

A-CAM

SONY A7V

SONY 28-70 F2 GM

This originally joined my kit as an upgrade to my old C camera, the Sony A7C, but it didn’t stay there for long. After using it for a few weddings, it quickly earned its place as my A camera thanks to a handful of meaningful improvements.
The fully articulating screen makes shooting from awkward angles much easier, the improved IBIS gives me even smoother handheld footage, and the APS-C crop mode adds extra flexibility without needing to change lenses. It’s one of those cameras that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but all the small upgrades add up to make shooting weddings that little bit easier.

B-CAM

SONY A7SIII

The OG of my camera bag. This camera has outlasted just about every other piece of gear I own, and even years later it still doesn’t feel outdated. I could happily keep shooting with it for years to come without feeling like I’m missing out on anything.

It does everything I need it to do, reliably and without getting in the way. The low-light performance is still exceptional, which is essential for weddings where the lighting can change dramatically throughout the day. It’s one of those rare cameras that has earned its reputation and continues to deliver, wedding after wedding.

C-CAM

SONY A7IV

This camera has a major flaw, cropped footage in 4k/50, which ultimately stopped it from becoming my A camera. That said, it still plays an important role in my setup. The image quality matches my other cameras beautifully, giving me a consistent look across every angle and making the edit feel seamless.

LENSES

SONY 28-70 f2

This is the holy grail of wedding lenses. The zoom range is perfect for the way I shoot, and that constant f/2 aperture is what really makes it special.

More importantly, it means I no longer have to stop and swap lenses throughout the day. Instead of thinking about gear, I can stay completely focused on the wedding in front of me, always ready for whatever happens next. It fits perfectly with my philosophy of shooting light, staying mobile, and never missing a moment.

SONY 85mm f1.8

This lens is in my bag for one simple reason: it does the job perfectly. It’s inexpensive, lightweight, and the focal range is ideal for ceremonies and speeches, letting me capture everything I need from a comfortable distance without getting in anyone’s way.

SONY 24mm f1.4 GM

If I’m honest, this lens is a bit of overkill for me now. It used to be used on my main cam when I shot with prime lenses, but since switching to a zoom setup it doesn’t get nearly as much use.

I still keep it in my bag though, as it’s great for wide safety shots during the ceremony and perfect for capturing all the action once the dance floor gets going.

AUDIO

Zoom F2

32 Bit Float Lav Mic

I picked up the F2 as soon as it was released, purely because of its 32-bit float recording. For weddings, it’s been an absolute game changer. I use it to capture the vows, and the huge dynamic range gives me plenty of flexibility in post-production. It allows me to balance the bride’s and groom’s voices so they sound consistent, almost as if they’re both wearing microphones, even when only one of them is mic’d up.

Tascam DR10L

QTY:2

These are definitely showing their age now, but they still have a place in my kit. I mainly use them during church ceremonies to capture the readings and to pick up the congregation during hymns. While they’ve been replaced for my primary audio, they’re still reliable for these supporting roles and continue to add an extra layer of atmosphere to the ceremony.

SONY TX650

QTY:6

I have this for the same reason every wedding videographer owns these… because Philip White told us to.

MICMAGS

magnetic adapters for tx650

Great little invention that lets me hide the TX650s

SENNHEISER MKE 400

on-camera shotgun mic

I’ve recently started putting more focus on capturing ambient audio throughout the wedding day, and the Sennheiser MKE has been the perfect addition. It offers great sound quality without costing a fortune, making it an easy choice for my kit.

CAMCORDER

sony CX240E

vintage digital camcorder

Not used at every wedding but occasionally given to guests to capture footage that has a nostalgic and home movie type vibe to it

DRONE

dji mini 5 pro

I ended up buying this after flying my Mini 3 Pro straight into a tree… so I figured a few extra obstacle sensors couldn’t hurt! Thankfully, it’s been a worthwhile upgrade for more than just saving me from myself.

accessories

Tiffen Mist Filter

QTY:3

I picked these up to take the edge off some of my sharper, more clinical lenses. They help soften the image slightly and add a nice bloom to the highlights, which gives the footage a more organic, film-like feel.

K&F Variable ND filter

Since moving to an f/2 lens, I’ve been able to get away with pushing my shutter speed higher and rarely need to reach for an ND filter. It’s one less thing to think about during the day, which keeps my setup quicker and more streamlined.

That said, it’s still always in the bag. You never know when you might need it for tricky lighting situations or if you want to get a bit more creative with your shots.

K&F Concept 72″ TRIPODS

QTY:3 Compact travel tripods

These tripods are perfect for what I need. They’re affordable, pack down small, extend nice and tall, and most importantly, they keep my kit lightweight.

Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo Strap

I bought this strap for one simple reason: to keep my hands free during certain parts of the wedding day. Whether I’m helping move between locations, chatting with guests, or waiting for the next moment to unfold, it’s great to have my camera safely by my side without constantly holding it. And if I’m being honest, it also looks a lot cooler than a standard camera strap.
